Styles/Influences, Other Info: Growing up in the frozen north I was first exposed to classical music by my parents. Halfway through grade school I started to rebel and discovered early country music by listening to the radio at night. The BBC and WBAI Radio out of NYC were early influences. Yale University had a folk coffee house called the Enormous Room. I spent many hours there listening to people from the likes of John Roberts and Tony Barrand to Ralph Stanley and Don Reno and Red Smiley. I started playing bass with a band out of Rochester, NY called the Swamp Root String Band in the mid 1970's. Then moved to Lexington, Virginia in 1976. It was a mecca of Old Time Music at the time with Plank Road and Ace Weems. After a couple of years of driving a truck to support my music habits and just a little bit of boredom, I left to join a regionally turing band called the Falls City Ramblers who were out of Louisville, KY. After 2 years on the road, I settled in Dayton, Ohio and became interested in and joined a classic Dixieland band called the Rambler Classics. In 1988 I accepted a job in Arlington, VA and rejoined the Old Time community. Now living in Montebello, VA off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I play banjo with Clack Mountain String Band and do solo performances as well. I was born and raised in old Kentucky and that is the music that is so dear to my heart. I also help organize the Morehead Old Time Fiddlers Convention during the last full weekend in July in Morehead, KY.
