Name: Tony Thomas Country: United States State/Province: Florida City: Sunny Isles Beach Interests: jamming, discussing old time music, discussin African American traditional music, discussing Instruments: guitar, five string banjo Email: writerrad aol.com Phone: |
Styles/Influences, Other Info: Been playing old time guitar since mid 1960s, started playing banjo in 1998o, fiddle not ready for prime time. I play clawhammer and have begun to play two fingered and Gus Cannon's three and four-finger styles. My big influence has been the Black banjo players like Gus Cannon (he made some great clawhammer that is never been made public), Dink Roberts, and Josh Thomas as well as a broad number of European American old time players especially players from West Virginia and Kentucky. I rarely listen to contemporary old time players but I treasure Paul Brown, Allen Hart, Pete Peterson, Walt Koken, Bob Carlin, Clarke Buehling, Bob Winans, Greg Adams, and George R, Gibson. I must say my banjo playing has been helped by the inspiration of a number of non-banjo playing (or closet banjo playing) musicians like Kerry Blech and Alice Gerard (both can play banjo better than I may ever play it even though both are primarily known as fiddlers nowadays and Alice is known as a singer). Course I would not be here today if it wasn't for local players Don Seneti in Hartford in the 1960s and today, Larry Crismond in South Florida. We all include the NLCR in getting this all going. I must say after decades of fan worship, I have Mike Seeger and Tom Paley to be great and elegant people to pick with and to study with answers on bigger things than music. I arely play in bands, most of my work is solo. I organized the Black Banjo Then and Now Web group and the 2005 Black banjo gathering. Since then I have gotten more and more into scholarship, research and writing about the history of the banjo in general and the history of African American banjo playing in particular. I have two chapters in two different scholarly anthologies somewhere in the process of publication, one on the banjo playing of Gus Cannon and another about the end of the Black banjo tradition. I am looking for any kind of contact with any person interested in the banjo from any perspective, though I would love to find people to hang with and pick with. I won a beautiful Mike Long Dreadnaught at a Bluegrass festival this spring and have accentuated my guitar playing, so I can back other banjoists and fiddlers as well as pick one of my five banjos. Tony I am particularly interested in meeting anyone in the Miami or Fort Lauderdale area who plays old time music who would like to get together and play some music

Styles/Influences, Other Info: In 2001 or so, I started playing my guitar and banjo again after very infrequent playing for more than 15 years (hippie flashback?). My Vega longneck from 1969 quietly told me that it would prefer clawhammer to the folk/bluegrass I played pn it years ago. So I found an old edition of Ken perlman's "Clawhammer Banjo" I had gotten years earlier and began buying more of Ken's materials, mostly off Ebay. More recently, I have been learning from Dan Levenson's books and workshops. A friend suggested that I began sitting in on the volunteer band at the Louisville Contra Dance Society's Monday night dances. That opened the world of oldtime music up to me. Playing with fiddlers was great -- even if I could just barely keep up! Oldtime music is infectious, and I feel like the journey has just begun for me.

Styles/Influences, Other Info: I play mostly clawhammer style banjo. I guess my biggest infuence is Grandpa Jones, although seeing Leroy Troy play was what made me get a banjo. I pretty much just bang away on it. It's not very intricate or pretty. I like old time and bluegrass music, but I play mostly gospel. There's not much of an old time scene in this area, but several of the local churches have "singings". I'm also a member of the local bluegrass association. I'm easy to spot at one of the singings or bluegrass meeting: I'm the only guy playing clawhammer and/or an open back banjo.

Styles/Influences, Other Info: Fiddle: Currently, I'm studying the northeastern Kentucky repertoire of players like Buddy Thomas, George Hawkins, Roger Cooper, and Alfred Bailey. I have also learned a bit of the WVa styles (Edden Hammons, Melvin Wine, and Wilson Douglas) and the NC stuff (Tommy Jarrell and Benton Flippen). Buddy Thomas is probably my single biggest influence and I've learned many of his tunes. I probably know more tunes from Kentucky than other states thanks to a workshop with John Harrod that opened me up to a vast world of fiddle music. Banjo: I played banjo prior to learning fiddle. I don't know what specific clawhammer style I play in, but I can transfer most of my fiddle tunes to banjo on the fly without to much hassle. I don't play too melodically, just the occasional drop thumb or galax lick. My influences are Gaither Carlton, Hobart Smith, Clyde Davenport, and Tommy Jarrell.
